Does oppo like the tudor style? I think tudor homes look really cool. I'm a fan.

Very much so

Properly done Tudor revival (as in that picture), absolutely.
But not that really cheaply done stuff they tried to pull in the '70s, where they just glued boards on top of stucco.

This is true. I know what you mean.

I think it looks like crap. Too formal looking for me.
My gf loves it though.

I'm more a craftsman style man myself.

Wow. Impressive. I approve.

The interiors are where Craftsman really shine. All the wood work is amazing.

There are no out of control weeds or garbage left by passing assholes though. Too formal for me, I like my run down house because no one notices the oil stains or dents in the floor...

That's very nice. I love how the ceiling is done. The staircase looks nicely done too.

I like it as long as it is done well. I am really a fan of mid-century modern design, this house is awesome... but you'd have to wear pants all the time.

We have a 1978 vintage Tudor. Not exactly my style, but we bought it for the proximity to good schools and the fact it sits on a wooded acre and is not part of an HOA.

Ideally paired with a period-appropriate car, of course. Can't do that with a Tudor!

Chrysler turbine car would work wonderfully.

Is "Craftsman" the actual name for the style or is that just what you call it. I've always liked that style, but I never knew what it was called

That's the actual name of it. I forget why its called that though.

You guys and your McMansion's. I would be extremely happy with something like this.
Secluded in the woods sounds perfect right about now. Living in a subdivision has made me appreciate growing up in a double wide on a lot of land.

Because they celebrate the craftsmanship of the carpenters by emphasizing detailed wood joints, instead of hiding them as is typical of most styles.

I knew it had something to do with all the beautiful woodwork.

Exactly. Unfortunately the fake Tudor crap lasted from the 70's well into the 2000's. I personally installed that garbage as late as 2004 (soul crushing!). It FINALLY seems to be going away though.

Structurally, those 'beams' you see are part of the timber frame super-structure, and the white in-between is the plaster "fill-in" to keep the weather out. The runs all through European nations.
Most of what I'm looking at is facade and not structural in that pic. (Appraisal office work from 2007 to 2012. Left because banks [my 'employers' don't make any sense.]) But I can say it has a good presence and street appeal. Is there a garage back behind it for the cars? Can you wrench without pissing off the neighbors?
I remember the first house I bought - we'd been out bid on 4 previously (the 1988 run up) and were getting worn out. Came to see a home that had a deep 3 car garage with 15' ceilings at road level, frame in steel Ibeams, and then required a stair hike of 22 steps to the front door. Neighbors weren't as issue due to extreme topology. I didn't care what was behind that front door... I was gonna find a way to buy that place.

My house is a tudor, but I really wish I'd gone for the fordor.

Me too. I'm really not too picky when it comes to house styles. I don't really like ranches though. I know the perfect car to go with that. A white Tesla Model S.

I'm not a fan of ranches either, not sure why, I just don't really like them.
![]() 07/16/2014 at 08:16 |

I think for me it's because all the other houses in my area make them look like ancient Indian homes. Most of the housing in my area is cookie-cutter 3,000 square ft+ stuff. The little ranches simply can't compete! Low ceilings (most homes have 2 story foyers and a family room with cathedral ceilings) small floor plan, and not very impressive from the street. But my grandparents who are old an can't do stairs like them because everything is on one floor. I can see how that's a very appealing for them.

I think you're right. They are just too "meh." I don't really like how normal and generally boring the standard ranch is, nor do I like the old person stigma (my grandparents live in one too). Frank Lloyd Wright knew how to build a good looking ranch though:

Yes. I would live in a modern ranch, that's the only exception.

Just looked at a condo like this in Norwalk CT... not my style... but the prettier half loves it.
